An Inside Story of SEO: How It All Started?

Search Engine Optimization or SEO: Today, every small to big business is aware of this term as it has become an integral part of this digital era. SEO basically helps the business in getting good ranks in search engine result pages (SERPs), because getting in the good books of Google will ensure more traffic and leads to the site.

To understand it in easy language, read the following definition given by Rand Fishkin, the founder and former CEO of MOZ, “the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of the traffic that you earn through the organic results in search engines.” And in layman’s term, SEO is about optimizing your site in every way so that it attracts the right traffic and increase your site’s visibility by getting top ranks on the search engine result page.

Well, do you know there’s an inside story to SEO that caught my attention? As an SEO Expert, I believe that every SEO enthusiast should also know it. Let’s have a look at what exactly happened back in the Mid-1990s.

The usage of the term, “SEO” can be traced back to the mid-90s. Before Google and its algorithms came into the game and took it to a whole new level, a Wikipedia article showed that the phrase was used as a spam message on Usenet by an industry analyst, named Danny Sullivan on July 26, 1997. But, was he the one who used the term, initially?

There seems to be no exact answer that has been identified. There are proofs that there is another person in this story, named John Audette, who has been using the term SEO at least 5 months earlier than what is written on the Wikipedia page. He was said to have his own company, named “Multimedia Marketing Group (MMG)” which was an online agency and the launching pad for some of the leading SEOs in the industry. The headquarter of this organization was in Bend, Oregon, and it is said to be the birthplace of SEO. MMG has listed SEO as one of the services that it provides.

So, this was the inside story of SEO. Hope you enjoyed knowing it. To know more, you can read the article.
